HISTORY OF THE ISLAND

According to Heredot, Tenedos's ( old name of the island, today known as Bozcaada) first population were the Palags probably believed to be settled in this island in 2000 BC. Later on Venezia,  Ghenevizia and Byzantians civilized in this beautiful island. After 15th century Bozcaadas had been under the control of great Ottoman Empire for more than three centuries. During world war 1 island controlled by different countries and finally  has been added to the borders of Turkish Republic Today.


BOZCAADA ( THENEDOS )

Tenedos was already an established sanctuary of Apollo in the eighth century, evinced in the Homeric formula for the god: "Lord Supreme of Tenedos" (Iliad I).

According to Greek mythology, the name "Tenedos" is derived from the eponymous hero Tenes, who ruled the island at the time of the Trojan War and was killed by Achilles; Philoctetes was abandoned on Tenedos. In Vergil's Aeneid, Tenedos is described as the island in whose bay the Achaeans hid their fleet near the end of the Trojan War in order to trick the Trojans into believing the war was over and allowing the Trojans to take the Trojan Horse within their city walls.


GENERAL INFO

Bozcaada is a district of Canakkale. ( Turkish city located in nort western aegan coast of Turkey ) it is the third largest island of Turkey. Gokceada/Imbros has a population of about 8,000, and the much smaller Bozcaada/Tenedos has a population of about 2,500. The main industries of the islands are fishing and tourism. The grapes, wines and red poppies of Tenedos have been famous for centuries. The population is mostly Turkish but there are still about 300 Greeks on Imbros and about 30 on Tenedos. It is the only city of Turkey where there is no village.



Wine had been the most important product of the island for centuries. Wine helped island people to live better lives comparing to the other islands within the region. After 90’s Turism started to grow and became the one of the most important figure for the islands economy.
